In their own words.
First-hand accounts from people who tried the method. Shared anonymously, as they wrote them.
After a week, and for the first time in a very long stretch of nightmares, I saw myself fighting in a dream. I walked in my sleep. I woke to find myself gripping the tap in the bathroom. The fighting dreams lasted three days. Now, three months on, I haven't had a single nightmare. I hold on to the writing every day. My dreams used to be horror films, full of fear. Every day I wrote that I am a good person, and that I am safe.
I feel a real difference after ten days. I feel relieved after writing. I feel that I need people less, and that I don't need to pour out so much to others.
The nightmares disappeared after a month. I used to have particular recurring themes in them, and they mirrored the things I worried about while awake. I was afraid of moving somewhere new, and wherever that might happen, the anxiety was part of me. I would see that place as a battlefield, or ruins, or somewhere marked by a death. I mended the rift: I wrote about that place as if it were good and beautiful. I didn't invent it. My anxiety really had been exaggerated, and I had many good memories there. After about a month I saw it as a truly beautiful place; it was no longer a battlefield. I wrote using every part of the method, and I feel, too, that I need people less and can spend more time alone, happily.
I've become more able to steer my thinking away from shame, fear, and anger.
While I was practising the writing method, the optimistic texts, on several days over the past month, I noticed I was describing myself as socially steady. I noticed it in myself again today. I can describe this feeling of social steadiness precisely, but let me also touch on an earlier memory: during one of my months of emotional instability, I wondered why I change so quickly. Why do I feel the world is dark for a few days, then live through another sadness, then a spell of joy, all of it accompanied by shifts in how I see myself and random attacks of low thoughts about who I am? I thought: what if I wrote something and reread it, about what I should see and remember of who I am? But I hadn't yet thought of writing in the form I later arrived at.
